Blue Clown Tree
2025
She began, as she always does, by reading the tree. Not a book, not a canvas — the tree itself, its bark pressed with the memory of seasons, its grain a manuscript in a language older than any alphabet. On this particular wooden panel, the tree spoke back with unusual urgency, releasing a procession of figures from within its fibres: small luminous bodies, elongated spirits, faces half-dissolved into the wood, all crowding toward the surface as if trying to be heard. At the heart of the composition, a central figure — rosy-dressed, wide-eyed, unmistakably a visitor from the human world — stands in the midst of this congress of the living and the half-alive. She is not frightened. She is listening. Perhaps she carries a letter. Perhaps she is the letter. Around her, golden homunculi and ghostly swimmers press through the teal and amber current of the bark, and on the periphery, barely sketched in pencil-thin lavender, more figures wait their turn to be fully born into the world. This is the emotion Olesya Volk has spent a lifetime chasing: the vertiginous instant of almost understanding — of standing at the threshold of the Green Language, the Language of Birds, feeling the world tilt toward meaning. The painting does not resolve. It hovers, trembling, in that charged moment before comprehension, and it invites the viewer to tremble there too.
