Tree Of Alchemy
2013
They have always been here, waiting in the stone. Long before anyone thought to look, the faces were forming—pressed into the earth by time, by grief, by the slow accumulation of everything we thought we had buried. This painting knows something about memory that language cannot hold. It understands that the dead do not leave; they transform. They become the rock we build on, the ground we walk across, the weight we carry without naming. Look closely and you will find them watching back—not with accusation, but with patience. The mother near the left edge, still half-formed, her body emerging from darkness. The child-face floating near the top, not yet committed to being seen. And in the center, the great composite presence that might be one consciousness or many, its features borrowed from everyone who came before. The bare branches reaching inward suggest this is a winter scene, though not of any calendar winter—rather the season of reckoning that comes when we finally stop and turn to face what follows us. There is something ancient here, something that predates the panel it lives on. The crimson dripping at the edges whispers of cost, of transformation that requires sacrifice.
