Demi Gods
2023
Once, as a child in Moscow, Olesya Volk pressed her face close to the bark of a tree and began to read. What she saw there — faces, voices, whole congregations of beings stored in the wood's wrinkled skin — never left her. Decades later, that childhood act of listening has become this painting: a vast, breathing crowd of spirits erupting from the grain and fiber of a living tree, as though the wood itself has been patiently waiting to be decoded. At the center, a luminous figure stands — female, serene, her form inseparable from the pale column of trunk from which she rises. She is the tree's own voice, the Green Language made flesh. Around her, the bark-world overflows: ancient faces peer from the left with the gravity of oracles; on the right, figures tumble and cluster in warm terracotta swarms, some cradling forms that might be children or seeds or unfinished thoughts. The lower reaches are a shore of souls, crowded and expectant, as if gathered for a revelation that has been centuries in the speaking. This is a painting about the moment just before understanding — that trembling threshold where the world seems about to reveal its grammar. Volk paints not what the tree looks like, but what it means, what it holds, what it releases when a patient eye and an open imagination meet its surface. To stand before this work is to feel that same almost-comprehension, that profound and tender vertigo of being on the edge of hearing something ancient speak your name.
