There is a moment — familiar to those who have stood long enough before an old tree — when the bark stops being bark. The fissures become faces. The knots become eyes. The grain becomes a sentence in a language you almost remember. Olesya Volk has painted that exact moment, stretched it, and invited us to live inside it. From the warm amber heart of this composition, multitudes emerge: masked figures press through the glowing surface like memories surfacing from deep water; pale spectral faces gaze outward with expressions caught between dreaming and waking; birds hover at the edges; a chorus of small beings tumbles through the lower registers as though spilling from a fairy tale told in a lost tongue. At the center, an open hollow — perhaps a wound in the tree, perhaps a mouth — draws the eye into its rose-pink depth, the pivot around which all this teeming life revolves. This is the Green Language, the Language of Birds, rendered visible at last. Volk painted this on a wooden panel — a choice that is never incidental in her practice. The wood remembers what it was. Oil and egg tempera pool in its grain, and the figures that rise from the surface feel genuinely summoned rather than invented. To stand before this painting is to experience the profound, trembling sensation the artist herself describes: the world on the cusp of becoming readable, nature on the verge of speaking, and the listener — you — almost, almost understanding.
