Performers

2024

You sense them before you understand them—a rising pressure, the unmistakable feeling of being watched by too many eyes. The figures in this painting do not stand so much as ascend and descend simultaneously, caught in some eternal vertical migration between states of being. Are they emerging into flesh or dissolving back into spirit? The crimson channel at the composition's heart suggests both wound and birth canal, that liminal space where existence hangs suspended between becoming and unbecoming. Look longer and the individual tragedies surface: the figure clutching its head in the upper left, the bodies reaching toward each other across impossible distances, the small faces trapped in the margins like memories that refuse erasure. This is the painting of a fever dream about mortality, about the crowds we move through daily without truly seeing, about the thin membrane between the self we present and the multitudes we contain. The artist has given us a congregation without a sermon, a pilgrimage without destination—only the journey itself, that vertiginous sense of souls in transit, forever arriving and departing in the same breath.
