Treegazing: Message from the SouthEast Wind

Before you understand what you're seeing, you feel it: the compression of countless bodies into a space that cannot hold them, the heat of proximity, the strange comfort and terror of belonging to something larger than yourself. A pale figure at left stands apart, observing—or perhaps newly arrived, still bearing the coolness of wherever souls wait before they descend into this churning sea of becoming. At the painting's heart, protected by swirling currents of humanity, two forms curl together in an amniotic glow. They have not yet been touched by the chaos. They do not yet know. Above, a spectral face watches—ancestor, deity, or simply the artist's acknowledgment that we are always observed, even in our most private transformations. The figures here are not suffering, exactly, though some strain and reach as if swimming through viscous heat. They are simply becoming—becoming each other, becoming something collective, becoming what we all eventually join. The artist has painted not a hell but a holding place, not torment but transition. In the crimson depths of this panel, we recognize the truth that individuality is temporary, that our edges are more porous than we admit. The pale observer will soon step forward. We all do.
